Artist Larry Griffiths' created this Christmas tree by welding rusted tools, pitch forks, blue glass insulators, a metal film reel, fan parts, and unidentified pieces from here and there. I got it home and remembered I had always wanted to do something witih two rusted barrel hoops behind our barn, so I added them at the bottom. Next, I tricked it up with white lights, ornaments, and plenty of birds. It's such a great tree. Plus, when it's time to pack it up for next year, storage won't be a problem because we can let it live in the garden, adding more rust for next year.

CategoriesFlaming Heart: Expanding Universe approx. 11' x 11" 2017 I wove this piece after my open heart surgery, Feb. 9, 2017. I was responding to the Australia Tapestry Workshop call for entries.
https://www.austapestry.com.au It was accepted and the tapestry flew to Victoria, Australia without me. Still, very exciting to be accepted into an international exhibition. The weaving depicts my titanium aortic valve (installed Feb. 5, 1999) and the swollen aortic arch (aneurism), the reason for my second open heart surgery. My aortic arch was opened up and a dacron tube inserted. If aneurisms are not repaired, they can blow, like a bicycle tire. You rarely survive if it gets that advanced. I added flames above the aortic arch, in keeping with my fascination with Catholic and hagiographic iconography. This was also inspired by the CT scan image that was done in preparation for the surgery. I discovered there are technicians who "photoshop" CT images to drop out other organs the doctor isn't interested in viewing. |
